Clover Farms was established in 1937 in the rich, rolling hills of Pennsylvania Dutch dairy country. Based in Reading, PA, we are now the largest privately owned dairy company in PA.

Fascinating History of Lemonade
Lemons were considered a rare and expensive fruit until about 1630, when a recipe for simple lemonade (lemon juice, water, sugar) was published in a French cookbook. This caused a lemonade craze to erupt in Paris, and street vendors sold the beverage by the cup from tanks strapped to their backs.
By the 1780s, Johann Schweppe, a German-Swiss jeweler, developed a new method of carbonation that made mass production easier. By 1830, Schweppe’s “fizzy” lemonade had become the rage throughout Europe.
During the Victorian era in America (1837 to 1901), the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union would heavily promote lemonade as an alternative to alcohol, inspiring Sunkist to use the slogan, “Good-bye to liquor, here’s to lemonade!”
From 1877-1881, President Rutherford B. Hayes would ban alcohol from all state dinners at the White House in an effort to please the Prohibition Party.
Also in the 19th century, ice and the traveling circus helped popularize cold drinks. The earliest mention of pink lemonade was in an 1879 article in West Virginia’s Wheeling Register that linked it to the circus. The most plausible origin of the popular pink-hued beverage may be the story of Henry Allott, a Chicago native, who accidentally dropped red cinnamon candies into a vat of traditional lemonade while working at the circus and sold it anyway.
