About the Class A Commercial Driver’s License
Acquiring a Class A CDL is often the first choice of drivers who want a long-term career on the road and the ability to travel longer distances and see the country. It offers other advantages such as higher earning potential and the ability to drive a wider range of commercial vehicles, including tractor-trailers (also known as semis, big rigs or 18-wheelers), truck and trailer combinations (including double and triple trailers), tanker vehicles, box trucks, straight trucks, and all Class B vehicles.
A CDL A license entitles you to operate most vehicles with a gross combination weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more. It also entitles you to tow other vehicles, as long as the towed units don’t exceed 10,000 pounds GVWR. Special endorsements can be obtained for hauling specific types of cargo, e.g., hazardous materials.
About the Class B Commercial Driver’s License
Some drivers choose a Class B CDL when they have a particular job in mind that only requires a Class B license, when they want to work in a more limited geographic area, or when they plan to drive trucks for a short time before moving on to a different career.
A CDL B license permits you to drive a single vehicle weighing 26,001 pounds or more without a trailer. You are also entitled to operate any vehicle towing a trailer that weighs less than 10,000 pounds. These vehicles include straight trucks, box trucks (including delivery trucks and furniture trucks), and tractor-trailers. And, just as with a Class A license, you can obtain endorsements that can give you additional opportunities in areas such as hazardous materials.
Clover Farms Truck Driving Job Requirements
- Must be 21 years of age*.
- Class A or B Commercial Driver’s license (CDL A drivers must have a tanker endorsement).
- Prior driver/delivery experience is preferred, but not required.
- Clean Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
- Must pass a DOT physical, drug screening, and physical capabilities test.
- Must pass a Clover Farms road test.
- Compliance with Company personal appearance standards.
- Handheld computer knowledge (or ability to learn) is a plus.
*Applicants who are under 21 are encouraged to apply because Clover Farms provides training.
