Key Differences between Class A and Class B CDLs

A Class A Commercial Driver’s License entitles you to operate most vehicles with a gross combination weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more. It also entitles you to haul a trailer that weighs 10,000 pounds or more. Special endorsements can be obtained for hauling specific types of cargo, e.g., hazardous materials. Your Class A CDL enables you to drive the following types of vehicles:

  • Tractor-trailers, also known as semis, big rigs or 18-wheelers
  • Truck and trailer combinations, including double and triple trailers
  • Tractor-trailer buses
  • Tanker vehicles
  • Livestock carriers
  • Flatbeds
  • Box Trucks
  • Dump Trucks
  • Straight Trucks
  • Passenger Vans

Acquiring a Class A CDL is typically the first choice of drivers who want a long-term career on the road and offers other advantages, such as higher earning potential, the ability to operate a greater variety of commercial vehicles, and the ability to travel longer distances and see the country.

A Class B Commercial Driver’s License permits you to drive a single vehicle weighing 26,001 pounds or more without a trailer. You are also entitled to operate any vehicle towing a trailer that weighs less than 10,000 pounds. Your Class B CDL enables you to drive the following types of vehicles:

  • Straight trucks
  • Box trucks, including delivery trucks and furniture trucks
  • Large buses, such as city, tourist and school buses
  • Segmented buses
  • Dump trucks with small trailers

Some drivers choose a Class B CDL when they have a particular job in mind that only requires a Class B license, when they want to work in a more limited geographic area, or when they plan to drive trucks for the short-term before moving on to a different permanent career.
