Who Invented Ice Tea?

Cold tea has actually been served in England and America since the 1800s and coincided with the development of refrigeration. Ice houses, iceboxes (refrigerators), and ice manufacturing had all been invented by the mid-1800s, helping to popularize the creation of potent cold green tea punch recipes that were heavily spiked with liquor or champagne.

Iced tea was commercialized at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis and was a hit with thirsty fair-goers who were searching for cold drinks thanks primarily to the unusually hot summer weather. By World War I in 1917, Americans were sold on the cool summertime drink and had begun buying special tall iced tea glasses, long spoons, and lemon forks.

About this time, black tea began to replace green tea as the preferred option for iced tea because inexpensive black tea was being exported from India, Ceylon, South America, and Africa. Green tea became virtually unavailable during World War II and, after the war, Americans would drink nearly 99 percent black tea.

Ready-to-Drink Ice Tea

Although water is the top-selling beverage in the U.S. today and sales of soft drinks, sports drinks, and fruit beverages continue to decline, ready-to-drink tea (RTD) has steadily grown in popularity.

According to the Beverage Marketing Corporation, sales of tea bags, iced tea mix, loose leaf tea, and single-serve tea all declined in 2018, while RTD grew both in volume and value, reaching an estimated $10.75 billion.

Research shows that black tea is still the most popular bottled tea (30%), while green tea accounts for 25% thanks to its promotion as a healthy option. Millennials prefer flavored teas and specialty teas.
